Join Greenfield as they explore Kenya’s wildlife, culture, and landscapes!

Day 1 - Kibera and Crafts

The GIS Kenya adventure is officially underway!

The group touched down safely in Nairobi, bursting with excitement and suitcases full of incredible donations generously collected by the school community. After a quick freshen-up, we headed straight into the heart of Nairobi for a truly unforgettable first experience.

Our first stop was the vibrant Kibera community, where we partnered with the inspiring Uweza Foundation. Despite the challenges faced by this under-resourced area, Kibera is full of warmth, creativity and resilience. Uweza does remarkable work empowering young people to build brighter futures by discovering and developing their talents - and the students were thrilled to be part of it.

The GIS students wasted no time rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck in! They worked alongside the children on craft activities, creating colourful beaded bracelets and keyrings, sharing laughs, stories and plenty of smiles along the way. We were also proud to donate some of the fantastic football kits to Uweza’s football academy, a moment that was met with huge excitement all round.

What really stood out was how fully the students immersed themselves in the experience - chatting with the children, picking up Swahili phrases, and forming genuine connections within the community.

We also had the chance to visit Uweza’s art gallery, where we were blown away by the stunning artwork created by local artists. Each piece told a powerful story, showcasing both immense talent and creativity.

Day 1 - dinner and donations

After an inspiring afternoon in Kibera, we checked in at the hotel for a very well-earned dinner and a chance to recharge. But the day wasn’t over just yet…

Next came the great donation sort - and what a task it was! The sheer volume of donations brought along by the GIS community was incredible, definitely the most we’ve ever seen from a single group. The students jumped straight in, working together to sort, organise and carefully label mountains of art supplies, clothes, sports equipment, kits and games.

Everything was thoughtfully divided between the three charities we’ll be supporting during our time in Kenya, ready for distribution the following day. It was fantastic to see such teamwork, responsibility and enthusiasm, even after such a long day.

Finally, after an unforgettable and action-packed start to the trip, it was off to bed for a truly well-deserved rest - ready and excited for what tomorrow has in store!

Day 2 - A Morning that Truly Touched Hearts

Today was when the service element of our tour truly came to life - and what a powerful day it was.

This morning, we visited the incredible Maisha Yangu Organisation, a community-based organisation dedicated to supporting families in one of the poorest communities in Nairobi, through education, health initiatives and community empowerment programmes. Their work focuses on strengthening families and helping individuals build safer, more secure futures - and it was inspiring to see their impact first-hand.

We began the morning by meeting the Maisha Yangu team and taking part in some fun ice-breaker games, giving everyone the chance to connect, laugh and get to know one another. Before long, the students felt completely at ease and ready to step out into the community.

One of the most powerful moments of the day was a guided community walk, where we were invited to visit the homes of some of the families supported by Maisha Yangu and talk to the mothers of the children they support. It was an incredibly humbling and moving experience that left a lasting impression on everyone.

Afterwards, the students took time to reflect and share their thoughts - and their responses were truly heart-warming. They spoke thoughtfully about how the experience made them reflect on their own privileges, while also recognising the strong sense of community, resilience and cultural vibrancy that exists within the neighbourhood. Despite the challenges faced, the warmth, pride and togetherness of the community shone through.

It was an eye-opening, emotional and deeply meaningful experience and one that perfectly captured the purpose of this trip and reminded us all why service learning is so powerful.

Day 2 - Creativity, Connection and Community

In the afternoon, we made our way to the wonderful Tumshangilieni Mtoto School, a truly special place that is so much more than just a school. It is a safe home, a learning environment, a garden, a sanctuary and a supportive community for vulnerable children, providing education, care and stability while nurturing creativity, confidence and hope for the future.

From the moment we arrived, our students threw themselves wholeheartedly into giving back. They led a range of lively arts and crafts sessions, helping the children create animal face masks, beautiful headdresses and colourful face paintings. There was also plenty of laughter, creativity and imagination flowing as friendships formed almost instantly.

The connection between our students and the children was immediate and incredibly touching to witness. There was so much mutual respect, kindness and joy, and the children were thrilled with the activities - proudly showing off artwork which they truly treasured.

Day 2 - Brass Beats and Sporting Spirit

We were then treated to a truly memorable performance by the school’s brass band, a powerful demonstration of Tumshangilieni Mtoto’s strong roots in the performing arts. The talent, confidence and pride on display left a lasting impression on everyone.

To end the day on a high, our students organised a football and netball tournament, giving the children the chance to wear the fantastic kits kindly donated by the GIS community. The excitement was infectious - the students beamed with pride in their new uniforms and had an incredible time playing, cheering and celebrating together.

There are simply not enough words to fully capture the emotions of the day or the impact it had on everyone involved - but the photos truly speak for themselves.

Day 3 - Creating a Legacy Together

This morning, we returned to Maisha Yangu for a jam-packed day filled with creativity, connection and giving back. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed back by the team and kicked off the day with bracelet-making, learning new techniques from their incredibly skilled staff. It was a lovely way to start the day - hands busy, conversations flowing and smiles all round.

Next, it was time to prepare for a very special group of guests. We walked to a nearby local school and collected an amazing group of almost 50 children, bringing them back to Maisha Yangu for a full day of activities planned and led by our students.

The space quickly came alive as arts and crafts stations were set up, buzzing with energy and excitement. The children worked alongside our students creating headdresses, masks, colouring designs and enjoying face painting - all with incredible focus, creativity and pride. The attention to detail was remarkable, with each piece carefully crafted and uniquely personal.

While many students led the creative activities, another group took on a very special project: painting the GIS mural tree. As the children completed their masks, they were added to the mural, transforming it into a powerful legacy piece that represents the children, the community and the connections formed during our time at Maisha Yangu.

The impact was immediate. The Maisha Yangu team were thrilled, sharing how the mural brought the room to life and how meaningful it was for the children to see their own artwork proudly displayed. It was a true celebration of creativity, collaboration and community - and a beautiful reminder of the lasting impact of service when we create with a community, not just for it.

Day 3 - Sport, Music and United hearts

The afternoon was filled with energy, laughter and celebration as sport and music took centre stage at Maisha Yangu. Our brilliant student leaders organised and ran a football tournament for the visiting children, who proudly took to the pitch wearing their brand-new kits, generously donated by the GIS community. The pride on their faces was unmistakable, and the area quickly came alive with excitement, cheering and laughter as members of the local community gathered to watch and support.

The fun continued as GIS students and staff faced off against the Maisha Yangu team in a friendly match - a moment full of teamwork, connection and brilliant fun. As the tournament came to an end, music filled the air and the children burst into energetic dancing, transforming the space into a joyful celebration.

To close our time with the younger children, Laila treated everyone to a beautiful musical performance that captured the hearts of all who watched. The children sat mesmerised, completely absorbed in the moment, as her talent and confidence brought the afternoon to a perfect close.

We then said a heartfelt goodbye to the school children - a moment filled with hugs, smiles and a few tears. In such a short time, these incredible children had touched our hearts and truly changed us, and it was clear that the impact had gone both ways. The connections formed, the laughter shared and the experiences we’d had together made it incredibly hard to say goodbye, but also deeply meaningful knowing we had played a small part in their lives.

As one group departed, we warmly welcomed the next set of students - the inspiring young people who attend Maisha Yangu in the evenings to strengthen their academic skills. Our students quickly got to work supporting them with homework, reading and study activities, working side by side with patience, kindness and encouragement. Alongside their learning, the children received what is often their only meal of the day - a simple cup of porridge - a powerful reminder of the vital role Maisha Yangu plays in supporting its community beyond education alone.

Our time at Maisha Yangu has been incredibly moving, humbling and heart-warming. Before leaving, we came together as a group to share our thoughts and reflections, and it was clear just how deeply the experience had affected everyone. Students spoke openly about the emotions they felt, the perspectives they had gained and how the community had left a lasting mark on them. These shared reflections powerfully highlighted the impact of the experience and reinforced how meaningful the connections had been.

The memories created, the bonds formed and the sense of belonging felt within this remarkable community will stay with them for a lifetime - a true testament to the power of service, compassion and connection.

Day 4 - Sanctuaries for Wildlife

After several busy and deeply rewarding days of service, today was a chance to slow the pace slightly and experience some of Nairobi’s most extraordinary highlights - and it was nothing short of magical.

Our day began at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage, an experience that completely captured our hearts. We watched as 12 orphaned elephants were cared for by their dedicated keepers, seeing them fed, playfully splashing in the water and cooling of together. Being so close to these gentle giants - close enough to truly appreciate their size, character and charm - was an unforgettable privilege, and some of us were even lucky enough to touch them.

Adding to the excitement were two very special additional residents currently being cared for by the programme: Titan, the adorable baby rhino, and Naughty, a four-month-old zebra who more than lived up to his name. Both were utterly irresistible and brought endless smiles to the group.

Next, we visited the incredible Giraffe Conservation Centre, where we came face to face with some of Nairobi’s most graceful residents. Feeding the giraffes acacia-based pellets and standing eye-to-eye with them was a truly surreal experience. They approached calmly and gently, interacting with such elegance and curiosity that it was impossible not to feel a deep sense of awe.

Spending time so close to these magnificent animals was both humbling and inspiring, offering a powerful reminder of the importance of conservation and the incredible work being done to protect Kenya’s wildlife. A morning filled with wonder, laughter and unforgettable moments - one that will stay with us long after we leave.

Day 4 - Celebration and culture

After our unforgettable encounters with elephants and giraffes, the day continued with a change of pace as we headed to the beautiful Karen Blixen Coffee Garden and Restaurant. Set in the former home of Karen Blixen - the Danish author of Out of Africa - the restaurant is rich in history and surrounded by stunning gardens at the foot of the Ngong Hills. It was the perfect setting to relax and enjoy a delicious group buffet, and even more special as we celebrated Matvey’s 17th birthday.

From there, we made our way to a Maasai market where the students loved browsing the stalls, practising their bargaining skills and admiring the incredible range of handmade local crafts.

Next, we visited the National Museum of Kenya, a fascinating insight into the country’s rich history, culture and natural heritage. Inside, we explored exhibits showcasing Kenya’s diverse communities and traditions, learned about its remarkable wildlife and discovered its place in human history through displays on early human origins. The museum offered a deeper understanding of Kenya’s past and present, bringing everything we had seen and experienced throughout the trip into meaningful context.

To round off our jam-packed day, we headed to a mall where students enjoyed some well-earned free time and dinner before returning to the hotel. This evening we said a heartfelt goodbye to our fantastic local guide, Antonio, and our brilliant driver, Dancliff, who have taken such great care of us throughout our time in Nairobi. Their knowledge, warmth and professionalism ensured we experienced the city safely and confidently, and they played a huge part in making our time in Kenya so special.

A day full of culture, celebration and connection - the perfect way to round off our Nairobi adventure.

Day 5 - Safari Dreams

It was an early start as we set off on the next big adventure of the trip - safari! After being collected from our Nairobi hotel in classic 4x4 safari vehicles, we began the journey south to Amboseli National Park, one of Kenya’s most iconic wildlife destinations. Set on the border with Tanzania, Amboseli is famous for its wide open plains, dramatic swamps and, of course, its breathtaking views of snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak.

On arrival, we checked into our beautiful lodge and were treated to a delicious lunch with Mount Kilimanjaro standing proudly in the background - a truly unforgettable setting. After some time to unpack, relax and soak in our surroundings, it was time for the moment we’d all been waiting for: our first game drive.

From the very first moment, the experience was nothing short of incredible. Amboseli is renowned for its large elephant herds, and we were incredibly lucky to see them roaming freely across the landscape - families moving together with such calm strength and grace. As we explored the park, we were also treated to sightings of lions, zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, antelope, ostriches and an impressive variety of birdlife, making every turn of the track feel like a new discovery.

Two unforgettable highlights came as the sun began to set. First, we watched in awe as a cheetah calmly crossed the road right in front of our vehicle - a rare and truly magical moment that left everyone speechless. Then, as we made our way out of the park, we found ourselves incredibly close to a magnificent bull elephant, an encounter that perfectly captured the power and beauty of Kenya’s wildlife.

After an exhilarating day, we returned to the lodge for a relaxed evening meal and some well-earned downtime, reflecting on everything we had seen. An unforgettable day from start to finish - safari memories made for a lifetime.

Day 6 - Sunrise Safari

Our last full day in Kenya began at the crack of dawn as we set out on a sunrise game drive, the perfect time to experience the wilderness while the animals are at their most active, before the heat of the day settles in. As the sun slowly rose over the plains, Amboseli came alive around us.

We were incredibly lucky to witness herds of elephants moving gracefully through the marshlands, their silhouettes framed by the early morning light, alongside towering groups of giraffes calmly making their way across the open landscape. The birdlife was equally spectacular, with flashes of colour and constant movement adding to the magic of the morning.

We paused at the scenic observation point, where we were rewarded with breathtaking views across the entire park, with the magnificent Mount Kilimanjaro rising proudly in the distance - a moment of quiet reflection and awe that perfectly captured the beauty of Amboseli.

The absolute highlight of the morning came when we spotted a rare serval, incredibly close to our vehicle. Elegant, elusive and utterly captivating, it was a truly magical encounter and the perfect final wildlife sighting to end our Kenyan adventure.

An unforgettable final morning - one that left us filled with gratitude, wonder and memories we will treasure forever.

Day 6 - Maasai Culture

Our final afternoon in Kenya was spent visiting an incredible Maasai village, offering us a truly special insight into one of the country’s most iconic cultures. We were warmly welcomed by the community and invited to learn about Maasai traditions, daily life and customs. We watched traditional singing and dancing, explored the village, and admired the beautiful handmade beadwork and crafts, as well as the striking, brightly coloured clothing that reflects such pride in their heritage. It was a fascinating and meaningful way to deepen our understanding of Kenya’s rich cultural identity.

After this unforgettable cultural experience, we returned to our beautiful resort for some well-deserved relaxation. Students had the chance to unwind, explore the grounds and visit the Hemingway Bar, named after Ernest Hemingway, who spent time in this region during his travels through Kenya - a lovely nod to the history and stories woven into this landscape.

As evening fell, we gathered together for our final dinner at the lodge, sharing reflections on the incredible journey we had experienced across Kenya. Sitting beneath a sky full of stars, with the silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro standing proudly in the distance, it was the perfect moment to reflect on the memories made, the connections formed and the experiences that had shaped us all.

A truly perfect final evening to conclude an unforgettable tour of an extraordinary country.

Day 7 - Asante Sana Kenya

Today was the day we said thank you and goodbye to Kenya, and it was a farewell filled with reflection and gratitude. We began the morning early, packing our bags before heading to breakfast as the sun rose over Mount Kilimanjaro. Watching the first light of day illuminate the landscape was a truly magical way to begin our final hours in Amboseli.

As a lasting farewell gesture, our students took part in a tree-planting ceremony at Sopa Lodge. Each tree planted symbolised our time in this extraordinary place - a living reminder of the connections formed and the positive impact shared. These trees will continue to grow long after we have left, standing as a meaningful legacy of our visit and something students will be able to return to, see and reflect upon in years to come.

We then climbed back into our 4x4 safari vehicles for the journey back to Nairobi, soaking in the final moments of the Kenyan landscape. Along the way, we were treated to last sightings of zebra, giraffe and antelope - a fitting and beautiful farewell from the wilderness.

Back in Nairobi, we shared one final buffet meal together before heading to the airport and beginning our journeys home. The students were reunited with families eager to welcome them back, carrying with them stories, memories and new perspectives shaped by their time in Kenya.

This journey has been transformative in ways that extend far beyond travel. The communities we worked alongside welcomed us with openness and generosity, and the experiences shared have left a lasting impact on everyone involved. Our students return with a deeper understanding of global citizenship, a greater appreciation for different ways of life and a renewed sense of gratitude for the opportunities they have. Kenya has left its mark on us - just as we hope, in our own small way, we have left something positive behind.
