After a late arrival in Sri Lanka, DHA started their first full day on the island with a school visit. Students got their hands dirty with much needed painting in the elementary school classrooms where they spruced up the walls and furniture.
After lunch they hit the waves and tested their balance, some surfing for the very first time! A buffet dinner back at the resort and some much needed rest after an action-packed first day.
DHA students returned to the local school to continue their service project with the Twedex Foundation.
Today they received a welcome dance before spending quality time playing, performing, dancing, reading and competing with their new Sri Lankan friends. Students gifted items from school and their own homes which were very well received.
The group then headed for Galle Fort where they had time to visit the local shops and learn the history of one of the cultural highlights of Sri Lanka.
Students were given the opportunity to give back to the local community whilst learning about turtle conservation. This ranged from cleaning dirty tanks in the hatchery, seeking fresh sea water for the injured turtle tanks and releasing the young into the wild. All students made a very valuable impact and received a certificate for their help. A real highlight of the trip for many!
After battling the rain in their surf lesson, the students received a special treat in the evening as they watched traditional Sri Lankan dancers take to the stage - there was even room for some DHA dazzling disco moves! Before bed, a beach bonfire that capped off another epic day on the island!
